A dramatic twilight sky at Pigeon Point Lighthouse contrasts with the extensive emerald green of the invasive Narrow-Leafed Iceplant (Conicosia pugioniformis). Imported from South Africa to stabilize highway embankments in California, the plant has become a minor threat to native vegetation. This would have been a headland covered in mixed chapparal and bunchgrass. The most effective and environmentally-friendly way to kill the plant is to peg black plastic sheeting over the top for a few months. Once an area is restored with native plants, a host of insects, birds, reptiles and small mammals return.
